Si è tenuta stanotte la premiazione di Bruce come Musicares Person of the year

After dinner, they auctioned off a few things (which didn't go well) when it came to Bruce's signed guitar. Bruce took over the auction from David Foster. He kept adding things. A guitar lesson with Bruce! A ride on his Harley! Backstage Passes and tickets for 8! A backstage tour from Bruce himself! His mother's lasagna! The final total, 250K. Wow. So fun to watch...the whole thing basically took place 5 feet from me.
Jon Stewart than began the night with a funny monologue about Bruce and New Jersey. He didn't do much hosting the rest of the night, except a few moments when they needed to stall. He was hilarious, of course.
On to the music (would have loved some deeper tracks, but didn't expect that at such a mainstream event):
Alabama Shakes - Adam. Wow. A powerful opening. Fantastic. One of my favorites. People in the crowd didn't know the song, but they nailed it. Brittany sounded so great. The only artist to attempt pre-1984 material.
Patti Smith - BTN. I've never seen her perform this before. She was so honored and happy to play this in front of Bruce. So sweet.
Natalie Maines, Ben Harper, Charlie Musslewhite - Atlantic City. Looked good on paper, but their voices didn't mesh at all. I wish they had done separate verses. Didn't love this one.
Ken Casey (of Dropkick Murphys) - American Land. Exactly what you'd expect. He nailed it. Bruce had a big smile throughout this one.
Mavis Staples and Zac Brown - My City of Ruins. Perfection. I wish Mavis sang more. Great choir too.
Mumford & Sons - I'm on Fire. Quiet and fantastic. All huddled around a microphone. Accordion, banjo and guitars. Wow.
Jackson Browne and Tom Morello - American Skin. Pretty faithful performance of the song, but Tom Morello (obviously) killed the solo.
Emmylou Harris - My Hometown. Nice, faithful rendition. Didn't stand out to me, but she sounded good.
Kenny Chesney - One Step Up. So good. Just acoustic guitar and piano. Surprisingly good.
Elton John - Streets of Philadelphia. Made it his own. Great piano solo. Very different mood of the original, but nice.
Juanes - Hungry Heart. Not a fan of the song, very AOR performance, but he enjoyed himself. Sang the beginning and ending in Spanish.
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill - Tougher. Exactly what you'd expect. Very strong. McGraw did the singing, Faith Hill did the harmonies. Just like Bruce and Patti.
Tom Morello and Jim James - TGOTJ. Just like the current E Street Band version. That room hadn't seen the solo before and was blown away. My wife's favorite of the night.
John Legend - Dancing in the Dark. Wow. Solo piano. It was fantastic. That was my favorite of the night, on a song I don't need to see live again.
Sting - Lonesome Day. The dud of the night for me. Band sounded good. With a choir. Sting seemed like he forgot the words, but there was a teleprompter. Just a meh version for me.
Neil Young and Crazy Horse (with Nils) - BITUSA. Can't explain this one. Ragged Glory. Two women dressed as cheerleaders miming the words. Crazy shit, and I loved it.
Bruce gave a nice speech, then proceeded to blow the roof off the joint. Asked and received a stage rush of tuxedos and dresses all up front.
We Take Care of Our Own (House Band with Jake, Nils and Patti)
Death to My Hometown (House Band with Jake, Nils and Patti and Tom Morello)
Thunder Road (House Band with Jake, Nils, Max, Gary, Roy and Patti)
BTR (House Band with Jake, Nils, Max, Gary, Roy and Patti)
Glory Days (with all of the artists on stage. He tried to get Tim McGraw to sing the second verse and he messed it up, teleprompter and all)
Curtis and Cindy were in the House band all night.
Great night.
Jack
